The methodology presents a theoretical and practical approach to one of the possibilities of increasing the self-explanation of roads through the optimization of directional design elements. It is the final output of the SAMO project and draws on the research and experience gained during the project. The project was implemented in the period 2014 - 2016 by the Transport Research Centre, v. v. i. with the support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic within the Beta Programme for the needs of the state administration.

Metodika poskytuje návod a nástroje k praktickému hodnocení a následnému zvyšování samovysvětlitelnosti pozemních komunikací. K tomu byl využit koncept rychlostní konzistence (rozdílů rychlosti mezi přímými úseky a navazujícími směrovými oblouky) a z ní odvozené optimalizace (pomocí dopravního značení nebo změn směrového vedení).

Autoři shromáždili data, vytvořili metodologii hodnocení a aplikovali ji na extravilánových úsecích silnic I. třídy. Metodika popisuje všechny kroky řešení; doplňkem je tištěná a interaktivní mapa nejkritičtějších směrových oblouků. Postup, prezentovaný v metodice, bude v budoucnu možné adaptovat i na extravilánové komunikace nižších tříd.
